MANSORY, the specialist in upgrading super sports cars and luxury limousines has now presented the gull wing racer at the Auto Salon 2008 in Geneva in a new design. Not only did the bodywork get a facelift, the engine was also given modified supercharging by means of MANSORY compressor technology. Ultra-light forged wheels and a superlative automotive interior complete the all-round renewal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fresh design in tried and tested quality&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the development of the MANSORY Renovatio great value was attached both to individual design as well as aerodynamic efficiency. To save weight MANSORY fashioned its body components out of carbon. The production car body is also made out of this extremely light and resilient material. One component of the body kit is the front apron in dynamic sport design. It channels the airstream perfectly to the custom-designed intercoolers of the performance kit and so ensures an extra helping of cooling air. The new side skirts constitute the optical link between the front and rear wheel arch extensions. These calm the airstream between the axles and create space for the outlets of the MANSORY side pipe exhaust system. The new rear apron with integrated diffuser takes care of additional downforce and puts the final touch to the sporting lines of the styling package.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;New components for impressive performance boost&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The 5.5 litre V8 engine with its standard 626 hp likewise profited from the comprehensive changes. The motto of the MANSORY engineers when redesigning the engine was �evolution instead of revolution.� The leading idea was not about making major changes to the SLR�s core. Rather, existing components were swapped for modified developments by MANSORY itself. For example, use is made of new high performance compressors and tailor-made intercoolers. The finishing touches to the performance upgrade are a sports air filter and modified engine management. As a result the Renovatio is two tenths faster from zero to 100 km/h than the super sports car production model. The top speed increases to 340 kph. Following the alterations the Renovatio has 700 PS and generates 880 Nm torque on the crankshaft.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Great looks and excellent roadholding&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MANSORY provides a special wheel-tyre combination in exclusive design for the requirements of the Renovatio. The one-piece turbine-wheels with five double-spokes, 9 x 20 at the front and 11.5 x 20 at the rear, are impressive thanks both to their sporting looks as well as their outstanding workmanship. The reduction of the unsprung mass due to the especially light forged wheels improves braking distance, acceleration and handling. For maximum wheel grip MANSORY uses 255/30 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres at the front and 325/25 at the rear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exclusive interior design without limits&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;MANSORY has succeeded in creating the perfect symbiosis of sporting functionality and luxurious environment. Only the very best materials have been used in the interior and provide for well-being. The leather processed by master craftsmen is especially hard-wearing and yet extraordinarily soft. This characteristic natural product with its special grain and the perfect craftsmanship of its decorative stitching convey an extravagant flair around the redesigned airbag sports steering wheel. It becomes the third member of the exclusive J-series model range, joining the Brera J5 3.2 C and Spider J6 3.2 C in our line-up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The dramatic model is the result of an 18 month development programme that has focused on supercharging Alfa Romeos direct injection JTS engine, making Autodelta the only firm in the world to apply forced induction principles to this power unit. The overall package hones the Alfa 159 into a true high performance saloon, pushing its dynamic abilities forward in every area, but without compromising on its comfort and �touring� characteristics. Top speed is raised to 165 mph, while 0-62 mph is achieved in 6.9 seconds. Exclusive features of the 159 J4 2.2 C include 8.5x19 OZ Botticelli Ultra Light alloy wheels, height adjustable coil over dampers with bound and rebound settings, stainless steel free flow dual silencer exhaust system, mechanical limited slip differential, front, rear and side aerodynamic kit, and perforated discs and new compound pads all round. Taking its inspiration from a number of Mercedes models, the company set about creating a visual interpretation of the GLK that would put it at the very top of the food chain in the urban jungle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most striking feature of the Urban Whip is what is doesn�t have - a roof. Although the original brief required the design to retain the structural integrity of the GLK, the aggressive look of the custom-made wide-body kit - which was developed in cooperation with RoBrady Design - made the roadster temptation difficult to resist. Boulevard submitted renderings of its roadster ideas to Mercedes-BenzUSAand approval was received in double quick time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Working with NBS Performance, Boulevard removed the roof, shorted the windshield and added the necessary structural bracing to create a roadster with cosmetic modifications to the door tops and pillars. �It was the finishing touch to the whole design,� comments Bradley. �The Urban Whip has that extra wow factor to make it a true head-turner.� With the focus on city life, the design of the wide-body kit is sleek and futuristic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Boulevard worked with Superior Auto Body on integrating bumpers, side skirts and fender flares to create a factory finish, while the factory grille was opened up wide and finished off with chrome mesh and accents hand-crafted by the artisans at STRUT.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The front headlamps retain their factory look, with the standard bulbs replaced by custom LED units for added performance, while smoked treatment brings distinctive style to the rear light cluster.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The overall ride height has been lowered by 64mm using a one-off set of custom lowering springs. And, when it comes to wheels and tyres, Boulevard is in no doubt that, for urban cruising, there is no substitute for chrome - and that size matters. The Urban Whip is fixed firmly to the asphalt with colossal 26� Asanti AF 150 chrome wheels with custom black accents and wrapped in 295/25 ZR26 Pirelli Scorpion rubber for a perfect ride. The stopping power is provided courtesy of a massive front and rear Brembo performance brake kit, featuring 381mm 2‑piece floating rotors and 8-pot callipers on the front and 344mm 2-piece floating rotors with 4-piston callipers on the rear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With flagship Mercedes performance models providing the inspiration for the interior, Boulevard worked alongside Mark Kraus and John Lancaster to create a look that is highly individual, yet still distinctly Mercedes. Using a striking black and white colour theme, the design integrates both diamond-stitched and perforated leathers for a distinctive, upscale look and feel. Piano black wood grain trim works together with a custom steering wheel and shift knob to create a cockpit that is as stylish as it is outspoken, while rear passengers are cosseted in twin hand-crafted bucket seats.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No seriously urban cruiser can be complete without a seriously urban stereo. And the absence of a roof will help the GLK Urban Whip share its sound with the rest of the world. Beneath the speedster cover lurks a mighty piece of kit from JL Audio. The custom stereo system pumps out over 5,700 Watts of ear-popping power in a visually stunning installation. Eight HD amps power the ZR component speakers and subwoofers, including six new JL Audio 13TW5 flat subwoofers, two of which are displayed in the rear of the Urban Whip in a custom-made clear acrylic tube that adds emphasis to their compact dimensions and slim profile.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;�The GLK was the perfect candidate for the Urban Whip idea,� concludes Bradley. �It has this incredibly powerful persona and shoulders broad enough to carry this kind of work. The official presentation stylishly introduces the Volcano in all its outlandish glory - from studio to the road. And although unaccompanied by an official press release, the video does give the first peek inside its plush, albeit largely unchanged, cabin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first Mercedes vehicle to join the impressive Hamann ranks, the SLR-based Volcano is not the first supercar to be suped by the firm. The Volcano slots into the line-up alongside modified Ferrari and Lamborghini models, complementing a range of tuned vehicles from firms such as Aston Martin, BMW and Bentley to name just a few.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The principle visually-differentiating modifications on the Volcano are its two-tone paint scheme and its huge rear wing, while of substantial impact are its new rear diffuser, black and white 3-piece alloy wheels, front skirt, triple-pipe exhaust and darkened rear lamps. Details are scarce but expect technical upgrades akin to the rest of Hamann`s range. type='text'>Hydrogen Car</title><content type='html'>he trouble with today's cars is that they still put out a lot of pollution,&lt;br /&gt;and use up fossil fuels. One day, we have to run out of fossil fuels.&lt;br /&gt;People have been talking about running cars on water for ages.&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately, most of the time, these people are crackpots. But there&lt;br /&gt;is a certain amount of truth in what they say.&lt;br /&gt;Now I know that trying to predict the future is hard, but I reckon that an&lt;br /&gt;electric car, powered by a fuel cell running on hydrogen, could be a&lt;br /&gt;goer! If you remember back to your chemistry classes at school, water&lt;br /&gt;is H&lt;br /&gt;2&lt;br /&gt;O. In other words, a molecule of water is made up of two atoms of&lt;br /&gt;hydrogen, and one atom of oxygen. If you use energy, and pass&lt;br /&gt;electricity through water, you can split water into hydrogen and oxygen.&lt;br /&gt;And you can run this reaction backwards, and combine hydrogen and&lt;br /&gt;oxygen to give you water and energy. (In fact, the word, "hydrogen",&lt;br /&gt;means "maker of water" in the original Greek language.)&lt;br /&gt;There are two main ways that you can burn hydrogen with oxygen, to&lt;br /&gt;give you water, and energy.&lt;br /&gt;The first way is that you can burn hydrogen in a modified car engine.&lt;br /&gt;Two companies, BMW and Mazda, are working on this. The engine&lt;br /&gt;works fine, but with about 20% less power - which is pretty reasonable,&lt;br /&gt;considering that we have been working on the petrol engine for a&lt;br /&gt;century or so. When you burn hydrogen in an engine, you get mostly&lt;br /&gt;water coming out of the tailpipe. You also get small amounts of oxides&lt;br /&gt;of nitrogen (from the nitrogen in the air), and even smaller amount of&lt;br /&gt;hydrocarbons (from traces of the lubricants in the combustion&lt;br /&gt;chambers of the engine). Even so, a hydrogen-powered car is much&lt;br /&gt;less polluting than a petrol-powered car. Of course, you use a normal&lt;br /&gt;gearbox and diff.&lt;br /&gt;The second way to use hydrogen to run your car is in an electric car.&lt;br /&gt;Mercedes-Benz have been using a strange device called a fuel cell,&lt;br /&gt;which has been around since 1839.&lt;br /&gt;A fuel cell is very similar to a battery. Both a fuel cell and a battery turn&lt;br /&gt;a chemical reaction into electrical energy. But a battery is sealed, and&lt;br /&gt;when the "goodness" in the chemicals is used up, the battery is flat. A&lt;br /&gt;fuel cell is like a battery, but with one important different difference -&lt;br /&gt;you can pump in the chemicals indefinitely. Fuel cells take in hydrogen&lt;br /&gt;Page 3&lt;br /&gt;and oxygen, and give off pure drinking water, and electricity. You use&lt;br /&gt;the electricity to run electric motors.&lt;br /&gt;Fuel cells are up to 80% efficient. They will get two or three times more&lt;br /&gt;energy out of hydrogen, than will a modified car engine. This is&lt;br /&gt;because the internal combustion engine has a stage where you&lt;br /&gt;generate a lot of heat - and this is where a lot of energy is wasted, and&lt;br /&gt;where the efficiency goes right down.&lt;br /&gt;The real problem with today's electric cars is that our battery&lt;br /&gt;technology is pathetic. The battery pack in today's best electric car, the&lt;br /&gt;EV-1, gives great acceleration, but a range of less than 100 kilometres.&lt;br /&gt;But if you use a fuel cell instead of a battery, you suddenly get an&lt;br /&gt;electric car with very low pollution, and good range and performance.&lt;br /&gt;There are two main ways to store hydrogen in your car-of-the-future.&lt;br /&gt;First, you can squash it and turn it into a liquid - but the container has&lt;br /&gt;to be very strong and heavy, and you have to insulate it to keep it at a&lt;br /&gt;temperature of about 260oC below zero.&lt;br /&gt;The second way is to shove the gas into a metal, such as magnesium,&lt;br /&gt;and it will squash into the spaces between the magnesium atoms. It&lt;br /&gt;sounds unbelievable, but you can actually store more hydrogen inside&lt;br /&gt;a metal, than you can as a liquid. Nelly Rodriguez and her fellow&lt;br /&gt;scientists at Northeastern University in Boston claim that they can do&lt;br /&gt;even better. They used incredibly thin sheets of graphite only one third&lt;br /&gt;of a billionth of a metre apart, and they reckon that they can store 30&lt;br /&gt;litres of hydrogen on a single gram of graphite, which works out to an&lt;br /&gt;amazing 8,000 kilometres per tank, with your hydrogen-powered car.&lt;br /&gt;Either way, you can fill your tank in under three minutes - which is not&lt;br /&gt;much different from filling up with petrol.&lt;br /&gt;One problem with hydrogen is the bad public relations angle - most of&lt;br /&gt;us have heard of hydrogen bombs, and seen the dramatic footage of&lt;br /&gt;the hydrogen-filled Hindenberg airship exploding in 1937. But hydrogen&lt;br /&gt;can be stored safely - in a series of tests on a tank of liquid hydrogen,&lt;br /&gt;BMW played flames at 900oC on it for 70 minutes, punched holes into&lt;br /&gt;it, and even squashed it until it broke. Desert racing was responsible for&lt;br /&gt;all of the deaths. Specialized automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles are&lt;br /&gt;used in desert racing, but motorcycles account for most of the deaths.&lt;br /&gt;These activities can be even further subdivided into smaller units, such&lt;br /&gt;as racing in eight-wheel supermodified all-terrain vehicles, with less than&lt;br /&gt;I00 participants and no recorded deaths.&lt;br /&gt;MOTORCYCI E PRECISION AND SII N I DRIVIN(J&lt;br /&gt;Of the 250 motorcycle precision and stunt drivers in 1980, approxi-&lt;br /&gt;mately 50 were professionals. None of the fatalities occurred among&lt;br /&gt;professionals.&lt;br /&gt;MOUNTAIN&lt;br /&gt;CLIMBING&lt;br /&gt;Of the 50,000 mountain climbers in the United States, only about 5,000&lt;br /&gt;are competent and experienced climbers. Included in the fatality expe-&lt;br /&gt;rience are 30 deaths that occurred in Canada: some of the victims were&lt;br /&gt;Canadian nationals. Some deaths may never have been recorded.&lt;br /&gt;POWER BOAT RACING&lt;br /&gt;The general categories of power boat racing are cruiser, drag+ inboard,&lt;br /&gt;outboard, offshore, stock, and unlimited.&lt;br /&gt;RODEO&lt;br /&gt;Rodeo events include bareback bronc riding, calf roping, saddle bronc&lt;br /&gt;riding, steer wrestling, steer roping, and team roping. Clowning, trick&lt;br /&gt;riding, and wild horse racing are also included but are not considered&lt;br /&gt;pure rodeo: fewer than 500 participants engage in these peripheral activ-&lt;br /&gt;ities. There may be&lt;br /&gt;as many more who race occasionally or who compete at illegal drag strips.&lt;br /&gt;The recorded deaths occurred only to the regular racers.&lt;br /&gt;Kart Racing&lt;br /&gt;Kart racing is often considered a scaled-down version of sprint car or&lt;br /&gt;midget car racing. Although the karts are lighter and have less power than&lt;br /&gt;the sprint and midget cars, the maximum speeds of all are much the same.&lt;br /&gt;Midget Car Racing&lt;br /&gt;Midget cars can be subdivided into quarter, half, three quarter, and full&lt;br /&gt;midgets. There were no deaths among the drivers of quarter and half&lt;br /&gt;midget cars during the three-year period. Most of the deaths occurred&lt;br /&gt;among the drivers of full midget cars.&lt;br /&gt;Snowmobile Racing&lt;br /&gt;There are five types of snowmobile racing: drag, enduro/marathon, hill&lt;br /&gt;climb, sprint, and closed course. Most snowmobiles are raced on snow,&lt;br /&gt;although a grassy terrain is sometimes used.&lt;br /&gt;Sports Car Racing&lt;br /&gt;Participants in sports car racing are about evenly divided Some primary examples:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Car types:&lt;br /&gt;• Hot rods typically are vehicles customized cosmetically and modified mechanically,&lt;br /&gt;often using an older vehicle as a starting point. The earliest hot rods were essentially&lt;br /&gt;performance vehicles. Over time, hot rods became more refined as their builders&lt;br /&gt;became older, more skillful and more affluent.&lt;br /&gt;• Mods (modifieds) are stock cars with a limited number of added or subtracted&lt;br /&gt;components, typically performance-related rather than cosmetic.&lt;br /&gt;• Rat rods are reactionary vehicles – typically rough-and-ready performance cars similar&lt;br /&gt;to the earliest hot rods and not owner-built show cars. They reflect a revival of interest in&lt;br /&gt;hot rodding in its earlier form.&lt;br /&gt;• Customs were initially modified new production vehicles, but over time became hot rod&lt;br /&gt;variants. Emphasis shifted away from new vehicles and cosmetic changes came to&lt;br /&gt;outweigh performance upgrades, eventually requiring customs to be differentiated in&lt;br /&gt;categories ranging from “mild” to “extreme.”&lt;br /&gt;• Resto-rods are mildly customized older cars with updated powertrain and suspension&lt;br /&gt;but largely intact exteriors. In some cases, resto-rods are so similar to restored antique&lt;br /&gt;cars that only larger engines and features such as larger wheels and metallic paint betray&lt;br /&gt;their past.&lt;br /&gt;• Tuners are contemporary variations of the hot rod theme – vehicles with added&lt;br /&gt;peripherals, such as customer wheels, spoilers and exhaust systems, but with fewer&lt;br /&gt;major body modifications. Tuners emphasize contemporary vehicle electronics, including&lt;br /&gt;owner modifications to on-board computer systems and the addition of high-powered&lt;br /&gt;stereo systems.&lt;br /&gt;• Blinged cars are contemporary production vehicles modified with custom accessories,&lt;br /&gt;particularly oversized chrome wheels and powerful audio and video systems. These cars&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;reflect the urban “bling-bling” fashion trends of the 2000s. Over 40 Chrysler’s attended and were parked atop Pyrmont Bridge for the day. The 1500-pound car has a four-cylinder Audi engine offering 220 horsepower in the base model, and a potential 300 horsepower in a more expensive variant. A choice of either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox will be given. KTM says the base X-Bow will hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The X-Bow has no windshield, and instead will come with specially designed helmets, intended to offer shelter from the elements rather than full crash protection.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After its debut in Geneva, 100 units will be manufactured in-house by Italian racing car specialists Dallara and sold by KTM. The price for the basic version will be around 40,000 euros.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If all goes well, KTM plans further small series productions of the car. This production will take place in Austria and begin in 2008. KTM is working on the basis of a projected 500 units per year. Typically automakers don't say which future production cars ambiguously named concepts are supposed to represent, but Honda officials had no problem disclosing their intentions for this project.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now it appears the car might be headed back to the drawing board.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although it wasn't slammed by the automotive press or enthusiasts, the concept didn't get rave reviews, either. It turns out Honda executives were hoping for something more breathtaking, too. As a result, they've asked the design team to rethink their plans, according to a report by Winding Road magazine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While the basic proportions, V10 engine, and all-wheel-drive will stay, the rest of the package will likely change before production begins in early 2008. First believed to be a prototype for the SL-fighting Z9, it now appears this prototype test car actually be the next Z4.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Behold the first shots of BMW's new convertible prototype caught with its top down. It probably sounded like a good idea at the time, but the temptation of a top-down test run came back to bite these BMW engineers when our photographer caught the car stuck in traffic and pounced on them at a stop light. The close-ups didn't yield any meaningful dashboard details thanks to the interior's protective covering and the flailing arms of the engineers, but spies did manage to see some details that suggest this might actually be a Z4 after all, and not the Z9.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First off, we have been told that the MX-5 Miata you see driving in front of this prototype was no mere traffic coincidence. Our photographer reports that the Miata appeared to be part of the test group throughout the afternoon. It seemed to be on hand for comparison purposes�which would clearly point to the Z4 replacement as the likely I.D. of this prototype. These topless photos also reveal that this test car had cloth seats � something that would never be found on a car in the Z9's stratosphere � once again strengthening the Z4 case.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The stowed top also gives a more revealing look at the rear deck just behind the car's roll-hoops, and cut lines suggest that this could be a conventional soft top, and not the folding tin-top destined for the range-topping Z9. We can't know for sure until we see the folding top in action, but it all looks quite suspicious to us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for the apparent size discrepancy between this prototype and the Z4, it could largely due to some ingenious camouflage. A closer look at some of the space between the outer camouflage and the true body that lies beneath suggests that the camo shell may sit several inches above the real body panels in many places. The hood camouflage, for example, easily sits 4- to 6-inches above the true hood-line, at the cowl. Strategic placement of such misleading dimensional cues can be very effective in playing tricks on our eyes and perceptions. There may be a significantly more svelte and petit car under all of that armor. And the next-gen Z4 could logically be upsized a bit, if BMW plans to bring a smaller Z2 into its lineup by decade's-end, as rumors suggest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These latest open-top shots of this Z-car prototype may raise more questions than they answer, but they give us a better sense of what lies at the heart of these mysterious test cars. Thanks to increased power (an additional 10 hp) and a 220-pound reduction in weight (154 pounds for the U.S. model), the new range-topping Superleggera is faster and more agile than the regular model.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Superleggera needs only 3.8 seconds to go from 0 to 62 mph � 0.2 seconds less than the basic Gallardo. The Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera comes with robotized mechanical e-gear as standard; a sports package including shock absorbers; and special suede-covered steering wheel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The car's engine is the latest version of Lamborghini's well-known 4,961 cc V10. 530 hp is achieved in 8,000 rpm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lamborghini engineers decreased the Lamborghini Gallardo's already low weight using advanced materials. The engine hood is made of visible carbon fiber and plastic, a type of material that guarantees lightness and also shows off the magnificent V10.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The rear diffuser and underbody covering, the rearview mirrors, door panels and the central tunnel's covering are also made of carbon fiber. Further reductions in weight were achieved by replacing certain glass surfaces with clear plastic. In other words, although the X330�s punch is greater at higher revs and speed, low-speed driveability isn't compromised thanks to an exceptional torque curve with over 221 lb-ft from 5500 to 7500rpm - 20 lb-ft more than the CSR260.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As the X330 is an engineering test bed it is envisaged that some of the concepts will eventually find their way into production. To begin with the X330 will spearhead the British firm's R&amp;D into bioethanol power in the coming months as it seeks to assess the viability of alternative fuel sources in road and race applications and cement a further 50 years of history for the legendary Seven.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In keeping with the Seven ethos of "adding lightness", the extremity of the X330 doesn�t stop at moving parts.
